Much of Melbourne is located on the mainland, though a small portion of the city is on barrier islands, separated from the mainland by the Indian River Lagoon. This lagoon separates Melbourne from the Atlantic Ocean, though in prehistoric times, was connected to the ocean. This chain of islands is easy to access via the Melbourne Causeway and the Eau Gallie Causeway.
